WEIHAI tOWER
Design During Internship

图片
Time: 02/2011, 5th year of  Bachelor’s program
Location: Jinxianding, Weihai, Shandong, China
Instructor: Weiguo Xu,
xwg@mail.tsinghua.edu.cn
Academic, individual work

The design locates in the Jinxianding Zone, Weihai, Shandong, China. The zone was a previous city center on the coastline which came to decline due to various economic and social reasons.

The goal of the design is to create a landmark to activate the area; as a result a remarkable and memorable form is urgently in need. I applied the parametric design method, the 3D voronoi algorithm to be precise, in form searching. I first generate a regular form of cuboid as the main body of the tower. Then I use a group of ellipsoids to bite off part of the cuboid and form a unique space pattern of 3D yard, which is the garth on the architecture surface. The outcome of the biting also resembles the form of the aquatic organism. After that I segment the yard bitten cuboid with 3D voronoi algorithm, which generates the perpendicular bisection plane of two points. Obviously, the denser the point array, the smaller the segments. The point array density is therefore decided by the scale of the space, according to the function analysis. The unit of the point array resembles the unit of water lattice.

Interior Design for the Disabled

图片
Time: 02-04/ 2009, 3rd  year of  Bachelor’s program
Instructor: Xiaoguo Xia,xgxia@tsinghua.edu.cn
Academic, individual Work, not carried out

My role: concept developing, modeling and graph drawing, layout arranging, etc.

The project is conducted for the disabled. The news of the big earthquake in Sichuan, China, and my volunteering experience in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic games reminded me that there are lots of people without a full set of arms and legs as us. In addition, it must be difficult for people loosing part of their bodies in an earthquake or other disasters to adapt to their new life. As a result I decided to design a dwelling space helping them recover both physically and mentally. I took a positive attitude. The disabled are not the ones should be pitied on or looked after. The society should make them aware that they still can handle most of their life and can also contribute to the society, through which they can regain their love and hope of life.

The concept is to create a closed-loop work out route to help the disabled in the physical recovering process. The wheelchair space affects the width and curvature of the route. The relationship with existing space envelopes defines the shape of the route. Apart from the route, the other critical element is the function cores, inserted in the remnant space of the envelope and the route. Considering that the wheelchair user can only reach things stored in a lower space, the pick-and-place should happen at a lower height. In order to achieve both the storage efficiency and the convenience of pick-and-place, I designed a “Ferris Wheel” storage space that can roll up so that it can use the storage space in higher spaces and can roll down and make a convenient pick-and-place.

Transfusion Pipe
Ecological Repair Design

图片
Time: 11/2008-01/2009, 3rd year of  Bachelor’s program
Instructor: Rong Rao
Group work with Chenchen Lu

It is a group design done with one of my classmates. The site is located in a discarded mining area. Our purpose is to repair the ecological “wounds” in the site with architectural design approaches. The repairing strategies have three  main focuses: importing sunshine with the discarded stone in the area, importing green with architectural connection of vegetation, and importing culture which creates a route combining the industry scenery and the natural scenery to raise an introspection of modern industry, local folk culture and the natural environment. The three focuses are visualized as a transfusion pipe injecting sunshine, green and culture into the site to cure its wounds. In this project we discussed technology problems as heat generation, ventilation, and reuse of existing resources such as discarded stones and falling leaves. We also tried to combine the technology with the creating of interesting and pleasant architectural space patterns, so that our design will be more than a piling up of technology fragments, but also, or basically, an adorable architectural design.

Despina
Folk-custom Museum of Tuyugou MazarAldi Village

图片
Time: 04-09/2009, 3rd year of  Bachelor’s program
Instructor: Luke  Li, Congrong He, Guanghai Cui
Individual Work

“Each city receives its form from the desert it opposes; and so the camel driver and the sailor see Despina, a border city between two deserts.”
                                                                                                                                                                                                      Invisible Cities
The design intends to create a multi-meaning form, raising different interpretation between the local people and the outsiders. For the local people, it’s an excitation to their routinely life, arousing a yearning for the outside world. For the outsider, by resembling the local landscape and applying local space pattern and constructing materials, the museum agitated a curiosity of the local culture. In the function aspect, the museum attempts to create public spaces as the stage and the bazaar. For one thing, the stage acts as an open-air opera house, according with the natives’ keen on dancing and singing, for another, it may also be used as a religious space, where people gather round and pray. The bazaar is designed for both the  local monthly market day and for the trading of tourism souvenirs .

Rock Climbing Wall Reform Design

图片
Time: Designed on 09-12/2009
             Carried out in 2010
My role:
Site survey and measuring, site model making,
preliminary design,
graph drawing of site plan, plan, elevation, perspective and component dimensional drawings

The project was done for the Tsinghua Mountaineering Club. This is the first project of mine that actually carried out. Although it is not strictly an architecture project, I’m glad to apply acquired architectural knowledge and help others.

One of the challenging and interesting parts of the project is the site survey.
